Right, starting tomorow, the richest sports league in the world, The English Premier League will begin its new season, and my fellow Gooners and I will start cheering for Arsenal as they attempt to win their first EPL title in seven years. Yes, they last won their title when the Invincibles went through an entire season unbeaten under the leadership of Patrick Vieira, with support from Thierry Henry, Robert "Le Bob" Pires, Bergkamp, and Co. We did come very close during the 2007-2008 season, when we finished third, only 3 points behind eventual victors Manchester United.
This year, however, it looks very unlikely that we have a realistic chance of ending the premiership drought. Our defence is very very weak, after the departure of William Gallas and Sol Campbell. Thomas Vermaelen and Bacry Sagna need more support. The new signing Koscielny will take some time to settle down in the Premier League. Every Arsenal supporter knows that Arsene Wenger needs to desperately sign an experienced Center-Half. The defence was our Achilles heel last year, as we gave away goals aplenty and our predicament was only worsened by shoddy goalkeeping by both Almunia and Fabianski - the latter has failed to impress in every opportunity that has been given to him.
We face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday and no matter how overrated they are as a team and the fact that they are no longer a top-four team, they are a tough team to beat at home. With Alex Song and Djourou injured, it will be very interesting to see what formation Arsene Wenger puts forward. I will be very surprised if he includes Fabregas and RVP in the line-up as they have only recently returned to the team after the round of international friendlies.
I hope Arsene finds a long-term solution to our defensive woes soon, else, this year will be just another year in the long wait for the Premier League Title. In Wenger We Trust.
